Chasmosaur

Chasmosaur

October, 1996

This partial study for a painting is ultimately about progression from the fierce to the absurd. The Chasmosaur finds itself in the middle of these – in the painting, there is a Deinonychus hiding behind and above the Chasmosaur in a tree, completing the frame of the ceratopsid with the duck in the foreground. All three figures are rendered different stylistically. In this study, the realism of the dinosaur is juxtaposed by the cartoonishness of the duck. In the painting, both will be contrasted by the darkened foreboding theropod.
